Social Network Training (Twitter, Facebook, Blogging) 

 Library members can access the Dynamic Learning Online web site.

Enter your Burdekin Library Barcode Number (e.g. M7000353XXX) and you will be authorised to Create Your Account on the Dynamic Learing Online web site.

If you enter your Barcode Number incorrectly you will see a message saying you are "Unauthorised". Press the "Back Button" on your web browser and try again.

You will then need to either click the New User or Returning User links.

Paper Tole exhibition now on at the Library

THE Ayr Library’s final art exhibition of the year puts a whole new slant on paper.


The show features the work of the B.V.B. Paper Tole Girls – three local women who have come together to combine their skills in paper crafting.

Burdekin Library manager John Scott said the artwork created by Beverley Eathorne, Vicki Oar and Beverley Bosel showed how a flat image could be brought to life.

Paper tole, also known as three-dimensional decoupage, is the art of handcrafting three-dimensional pictures from flat prints. Paper tole art is created by skillfully cutting, shaping, and assembling pieces of paper layered onto an image until a three-dimensional version of the image emerges.

Cooking classes at the library

Wow - last week saw tasty smells wafting through the Library during the cooking class. Cooking for ones and two's in partnership with the health promotions team is a great success.  6 people every week are learning new cooking skills and having a great time. The claases will run again in 2011 so stay tuned for further details.

Conference presentation

The Burdekin Library is attending the SirsiDynix APAC user conference this coming week. For those wondering its about the software that runs our Library system including the public on-line catalogue.

We are doing a presentation on how we use "LibraryThing for Libraries" which gives you suggestions for other authors to try and reviews many of the books we have. The conference will have Librarians from Australia and Asia-Pacific.         

Web site gems or - a rose amongst many thorns

From time to time library staff comment about web sites that have caught their eye. This is one that leaves me spellbound, strongly recommended.

Nutrition week at the Burdekin library

What a week we are having with Nutrition week, there have been health checks and cooking classes amongst other things this week. The photos below give some indication of what we have been up to. A very big thank you to the team from Health Promotion Connections Inc. at Bowen who partnered with us.

MP3's and Wikki's

THIS weeks ‘Tech Talk with John’ will look at the world of MP3 and Wikkis. Find out more about what a MP3 audio book is and how to use them and more importantly how to enjoy them.

Unlike blogs, where you can only add comments to someone else’s posts, wikis enable many users to actually add or change the content on the website. You can both create your own and invite others to contribute, or you could become a contributor to someone else’s wiki. "

Do you want to improve your computer skills?

The library is currently evaluating a new web based computer tutorial sysyem that will allow you to brush up on topics of interest like Word 2007. We like what we see so stay tuned for more details which will be available shortly.

Our Library staff are winners

One of our library trainee's Jasmin Delle Baite was crowned the "2010 Sunwater Burdekin Water Festival Senior Ambassador" at a gala function last night at Home Hill. Jasmin is one of the friendly faces library users see at the front desk every day. The Library congratulates Jasmin on being crowned Senior Ambassador.

New books have arrived

New books are always in high demand. Checkout the display as you enter the library and reserve one.

Will the Ipad replace a computer?

A lot has been written and said about Apple's Ipad. Why not come along tonight from 6-7pm and find out a bit about it. As part of the regular "Tech talks with John" series we will be looking at the Ipad and what you may be able to do with it. You will have a chance to look and play with one duringthe evening. Baby Rhyme Time

Baby Rhyme Time is an important activity for us, it introduces new mums and dads to the world of stories and simple rhyme activities they can do with their little one.  Its on a Saturday morning from 9.30-10am during term time. Module 2 - Listen , Watch and Mix it now open

The Second module in the State Library of Queensland's on-line learning program titled  'Listen , Watch and Mix it' started yesterday. One of the interesting topics is Mashups. If you have not signed up for the programme call the library on 47839970 to find out how to get started.

Organise yourself Module 1 "Looking@2.0"

Hopefully by now  you will be exploring this module.  Organize your books is a lot of fun, one of the topics referred to is social cataloguing websites and it makes reference to Library Thing.

Here at the Burdekin we use Library Thing for libraries for a lot of things including book reviews and there are some 450,000 reviews in Library Thing which we potentially draw from. The best part about these book reviews, they are from people who actually have read the book and from all over the world - pretty impressive i think.

Each month we feature artists across the Burdekin with our "Art and Artists of the Burdekin" series and August is no different as the photograph above shows. Starts Tuesday 10 August.

Ipad and the public library

Burdekin library is just getting used to a new addition -an Ipad and boy is it impressive.Once the staff are fully trained up we will make it available for use in the library, it's loaded with a number of useful programs and of course some games. Initial impression very cool.
